One of the good things about living in a small town is that there’s virtually no crime, so Charlie had the jail cell all to herself. Lance had been generous with her phone privileges. She’d been able to contact Susan, who recommended a lawyer, and Ms. Ada. She didn't know why she had contacted the latter, other than it gave Charlie some kind of comfort to hear her voice. She had promised to be at her bail hearing. It was still a few hours away. Charlie tried to rest, but the firm mattress and sterile environment were not conducive to sleeping. Instead, she stared into space and wondered what she would do next. The test had come back positive for gun residue on her hands. They hadn't heard back from the lab yet on the clothes she wore to the station or the hoodie they had found. She had a sinking suspicion they'd find her fingerprints on the gun as well.

Since Charlie didn't own a black hoodie, she knew it was a plant and more than likely had the damaging gunshot residue on it. She had been right that someone was framing her; she had just been wrong about who it was. It couldn’t have been Andy since the items had to be planted after he was shot. She should have known better to suspect him anyway. The situation had her overthinking everything.

She thought of him alone in that hospital bed fighting for his life. If he made it, could he ever

forgive her for thinking such horrible things about him?

She'd always been scared of her feelings for him. He'd been a heart- breaker, with his quick smile and southern charm. He wasn't one for commitment, and in Charlie's book, that made him dangerous. But she hadn't really understood danger until she met Jack Marsden.

He was a snake with a silver tongue and had slithered his way past all of Charlie's defenses. Even from the grave, he'd managed to destroy her world for the second time. Ever since Lance had mentioned his name, she could hear his threats. He had promised to make her life a living hell and it was a promise he’d kept.

She was just too exhausted to think. She needed to shower and to brush her teeth. She had called the attorney that Susan had suggested, and she would be bringing her some clothes and personal items to freshen up with so she wouldn't go before the Judge in the horrible jumpsuit.

Charlie finally managed to rest until her lawyer arrived. Wren Kelly looked like she'd just finished high school instead of practicing law for over a decade. She had dated Susan's older brother, and although the relationship hadn't worked out, she had stayed a close friend of the family. She didn't wear a stitch of make-up on her freckled face, and her sleek strawberry-blonde bob was held back with a tiny tortoiseshell headband. The gray suit she wore was perfectly tailored to fit her petite frame. She reached her hand out to shake Charlie's hand.
